Antique Japanese Isho-Dansu chest crafted from paulownia wood (kiri), dating to the late Meiji to early Taishō period, circa 1890–1920. This type of tansu was traditionally used for storing clothing and textiles in Japanese homes.
The piece features the typical structure of an isho-dansu, with large horizontal drawers for garments and a vertical column of smaller drawers intended for accessories or personal items. Its design reflects the practical functionality of late nineteenth-century Japanese domestic furniture.
It is constructed in paulownia (kiri), a lightweight wood highly valued in Japan for textile storage due to its natural resistance to humidity and insects. The structure is reinforced with traditional iron fittings (kanagu) and protective corner plates.
The chest retains a dark aged finish with a deep natural patina developed over decades of use. Signs of wear contribute to the authenticity and character of the piece.
With its balanced proportions and restrained design, this tansu can easily integrate into contemporary interiors while bringing a strong presence rooted in Japanese craftsmanship.
