This antique chest of drawers was made in Central Europe at the end of the nineteenth century, when domestic furniture balanced everyday functionality with strong regional craftsmanship. Pieces like this were commonly found in homes across Austria, Germany and Bohemia, where pine was widely used for household furniture.
Constructed in solid pine, the chest features a sturdy structure with three large drawers originally intended for storing clothing, linens and household textiles. Its restrained proportions and straightforward design reflect the practical character of Central European furniture from this period.
White porcelain knobs and metal key plates create a subtle contrast against the warm surface of the wood. Traditional dovetail joints visible in the drawers reveal the quality of the craftsmanship and the durability with which the piece was built.
At some point during its life the chest was painted, which was common for domestic furniture of the nineteenth century. During restoration this later paint layer was carefully removed, allowing the natural tone and texture of the pine to reappear.
Today the surface reveals a soft aged patina, where the grain, knots and traces of time remain visible.
