Tall wardrobe in solid pine, with two doors and interior shelves, originally from central Europe and dated to the early twentieth century. A storage piece of exceptional vertical scale, sitting between a bedroom wardrobe and a pantry or dressing cabinet, representative of central European utilitarian vertical furniture with serene architecture.
In the homes of central Europe at the turn of the twentieth century, tall two-door wardrobes were practical solutions for vertical spaces, capitalising on the high ceilings typical of the era. They were used in bedrooms to store clothing and textiles, in expanded kitchens for pantry storage, or in dressing rooms of principal homes. The exceptional height — nearly 1.83 metres — provided significant storage capacity without occupying floor space. Pine was the local timber of choice for its availability and noble ageing.
It is built in solid pine with two frame-and-panel doors closing on original forged-iron hinges. The interior organises shelves — some original, others replaced during the piece’s life — to compartmentalise space. The sides are reinforced through frame-and-panel structure ensuring structural stability despite the height. The legs, of square section, are simple but robust, and the hardware retains its most noble oxidation.
The patina is noble and characteristic: the wood shows a settled honey-brown tone with entirely legible grain and soft matte sheen. The vertical silhouette stands out for its restrained presence — the reduced depth (50 cm) avoids protruding into the room — and the functional character is evident in the sober composition. The forged-iron hardware maintains its structural integrity.
For its vertical scale and compact depth, it sits naturally in contemporary rustic, eclectic, Scandinavian, and high-ceilinged lofts, where it works as a bedroom wardrobe for clothing, a storage piece in an open kitchen, a structuring element in a dressing room or an architectural piece that orders visually a tall wall. Its restrained presence facilitates integration into varied spaces.
