Mid-Century sideboard veneered in walnut and raised on tapered legs, made in Czechoslovakia around 1960. A Mid-Century Modern piece halfway between a dining-room sideboard and a living-room storage cabinet, representative of the post-war Central European furniture industry in a modern key.
In Central Europe of the fifties and sixties — Czechoslovakia, Poland, GDR — a furniture industry of high technical quality emerged that adapted Scandinavian and Italian lines to serial workshop production. Sideboards like this were conceived as the principal piece of the dining-living room: they housed crockery, table linen, glassware and serving items in a light volume, raised off the floor to emphasize the horizontality of the whole.
It is built on a solid wood structure veneered in walnut, with a multi-section front resolved in strongly figured wood and bookmatched veneers — two veneer leaves mirrored symmetrically, a hallmark of the Mid-Century. The legs are tapered, in solid wood, joined to the body with visible dowels. The top is finished with a thin edge and a black trim moulding that separates the body from the surface.
The patina preserves the depth of the original walnut: the veneer keeps its soft sheen with a very even natural ageing. The legs and edges show light rubs typical of use and circulation, without affecting structural integrity. The interior is in good order, with functional shelves.
Thanks to its modern silhouette and elegant lines, it sits naturally in Mid-Century, vintage, japandi and contemporary modern interiors, where it works as a dining-room sideboard, a living-room storage piece, a low cabinet in a bedroom or a support piece for a television. Its figured surface introduces warmth without resorting to colour.
