This antique Chinese kang-style low table, crafted in elm wood and dating to around 1900, belongs to the tradition of northern Chinese furniture associated with floor-level living.
Its low and compact proportions reflect its use in domestic interiors where daily activities —eating, working and gathering— took place on raised platforms or directly on the floor. While not a strictly utilitarian kang table (kang zhuo), its typology and scale clearly place it within this functional context.
The defining feature of this piece is its carved apron with soft contours, an uncommon element in more austere kang tables, adding a subtle decorative dimension while maintaining structural integrity. This detail suggests a slightly more refined interpretation of traditional furniture.
The construction is solid, featuring visible traditional joinery and a top reinforced with old repair patches that stabilize the wood and reflect long-term use. The surface retains a well-developed original patina, with marks, knots, small cracks and tonal variations.
