Antique OPAL serving trolley in wood, with a black tubular steel frame and two trays in amber-lacquered wood on swivel casters. It originates from Germany, from the mid-twentieth century, where OPAL Kleinmöbel specialised in modernist auxiliary furniture for the postwar home.

The Servierwagen — domestic serving trolley — was one of the signature typologies of German mid-century design. It allowed coffee, tea or aperitifs to be wheeled from the kitchen to the living room without breaking the host’s rhythm, at a time when the domestic interior was opening up and informality gained ground. OPAL Kleinmöbel, the German maker that specialised in auxiliary furniture, marked its pieces with a small triangular plaque in raised gilt — still legible on this example.

The construction is typical of the period: a tubular steel frame lacquered matte black, welded cleanly and finished with four swivel casters set in chrome mounts and rubber tyres. The two trays, in solid wood lacquered amber, sit within the frame with rebated edges that prevent glasses from slipping. A horizontal handle on the short side allows it to be pushed comfortably.

The original lacquer retains most of its sheen, with localised marks — small scratches on the trays, the odd chip at the edges — that reveal decades of domestic use. The casters keep their rubber intact and roll smoothly. The piece arrives complete, with every original element and the maker’s plaque untouched.

It sits naturally in mid-century, modernist or contemporary eclectic interiors. It works as a bar cart beside the sofa, as a mobile side table in the dining room, or as a stand for plants and books in a reading corner. Its light silhouette and the dialogue between black metal and warm wood echo the French and Italian domestic furniture of the same years, without losing the Germanic sobriety.
