This antique cabinet in solid pine brings together carved panels with curved tracery, decorative spandrels and a leaf-shaped iron lock plate. The patina is dense and dark, with the honest marks of prolonged domestic use. China, circa 1900.
In northern China, mid-height sideboards were placed in the main room or in secondary spaces to store belongings, clothes or kitchen utensils. Rural cabinetry kept the forms and carved details inherited from the Qing repertoire well into the 20th century.
The construction is the usual one: solid pine structure, front with upper drawer over carved panels, mortise and tenon joinery, top with slightly moulded edges and worked lower apron. The hardware — lock plate, rings and hinges — is original in wrought iron.
The current patina keeps a dense dark layer with localised wear in the most-handled areas. The carved detail in the spandrels and drawer panels keeps relief and clarity. No invasive restorations.
It suits a sitting room, dining room or study. Its mid height allows it to serve as a tableware sideboard, a storage unit or a decorative support. The carved tracery brings character without slipping into ornamental excess.
