This antique Chinese console table in wood with drawers and openwork foliage carving, is a domestic piece from northern China around 1900. Originates from northern China, from the late Qing period, where local wood was worked with openwork carving of vegetal and zoomorphic motifs.

Consoles with openwork foliage carving were the most elaborately worked pieces within domestic furniture of northern China during the Qing Dynasty. Openwork relief carving of dragons, phoenixes or vegetal elements indicated the status of the piece and the space it occupied.

The top projects at both ends. The drawers carry fronts with openwork carving of vegetal and zoomorphic motifs. The lower apron also features openwork of leaves and scrolls. The straight legs retain portions of the original red lacquer.

The wood has developed a dark patina with warm tones. The openwork carving retains greater darkness in the inner recesses, creating contrast with the carving ridges.

This console suits japandi, wabi-sabi or orientalist eclectic interiors. Its decorative richness makes it especially suitable for an entrance hall or living room.
