This antique primitive storage bench in wood is a bench with a chest, a lift-up seat and carved sides, of thick board. It originates from Transylvania, from the mid-nineteenth century, within primitive solid-wood furniture.

A dual-purpose piece of rural furniture, used interchangeably as a bench or as a storage chest, dating to circa 1850. The seat lifts to reach the interior, where blankets, grain or household goods were kept.

The structure is solid wood worked by hand, with thick boards, shaped sides and a continuous compartment beneath the lift-up seat. The joinery is elemental and robust, and keeps the tool marks.

The patina is dry and warm, with the grain and knots on view and deep wear at edges and seat. The surface reads as living wood, with no restoration to mask its primitive making.

For its continuous seat and its chest, it serves as a hallway bench with storage, at the foot of the bed or in an entrance. It fits rustic, primitive and wabi-sabi interiors, where it brings a solid, honest presence.
