This antique carved low sideboard in fir wood comes from the far northwest of China, dating from the late Qing dynasty. The piece shows a front carved in flat relief with five geometric panels and continuous borders along its edges. At 272 cm long and 66 cm high, it sits between a chest and a low sideboard.
Domestic furniture from northwestern China combines mainland Chinese tradition with Central Asian influence brought by the Silk Road. Low sideboards and bench-chests were used as resting seats, storage platforms at the foot of the kang, and depositories for clothes and textiles. Repeated flat carving is a recognisable regional mark: nothing figurative, all dense geometry covering the surface.
The body is built in solid fir, a soft resinous wood common in northwestern China. The top is a single continuous board and the front face is divided into five recessed square panels, each carved with a different geometric pattern (parallel diamonds, festoons, zigzag motifs). Perimeter borders extend the decoration to the edges. The construction is traditional Chinese mortise-and-tenon, without metal fasteners.
The carving shows patient and meticulous work. Each panel was gouged out with regular rhythm, leaving a three-dimensional texture that catches side light. The dark patina of the wood has settled in the hollows of the relief and brings out the design. On the most exposed surfaces — top edges, corners — the wood has been polished by daily handling into a warm tone.
Given its length and low height, this piece plays a clear role in a contemporary interior. It works as a bench at the foot of a large bed, as a low console under a long window, or as an entrance piece in large halls. It fits wabi-sabi, contemporary rustic and Mongolian or Central Asian inspired projects.
