Antique carved low sideboard in pine wood, Chinese provincial furniture originating from Xinjiang and dated circa 1900. Originates from Xinjiang province, in western China, from the late 19th century, where local pine was worked using mortise-and-tenon joinery without nails, with fronts covered in low-relief carving.
In the rural houses of muslim Xinjiang province, carved low sideboards occupied the main room and served both as a storage piece and as an ornamental element. The density of the carving made them the central visual piece of the interior, equivalent to the role played in other regions by polychrome painting on lacquer.
Built in solid pine using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, without nails. The front articulates five doors with circular iron latch-style pulls, each resolved as a recessed panel with a moulded frame and carved in low relief with geometric lattices and quatrefoil floral motifs. The lower apron continues the carved language with a meander and lattice border. The top finishes in protruding lobed ends, characteristic of northern rural furniture.
The patina retains the warm tone of aged pine, light and luminous, with the low-relief carving defined by raking light. The sheen is matte. The surfaces show marks, stains and traces of prolonged domestic use, integrated into the wood. The structure remains solid and the original hardware is in place.
It fits naturally in wabi-sabi, contemporary rustic or eclectic interiors. It works as a living-room sideboard, a long bench-sideboard or a horizontal console. The ornamental density of the carving turns it into a visual focus within a sober interior.
