This antique Japanese document chest with drawers, a portable tansu, is crafted in solid wood with extensive hand-forged iron hardware, produced in Japan during the Meiji–Taishō period. Designed for secure storage, it combines durability and function.

This type of Japanese storage chest was used to keep valuables, documents or personal belongings. Its compact format with drawers allows efficient organization.

The construction features traditional Japanese joinery reinforced with iron plates, hinges and locking elements. The iron hardware adds both structural strength and a distinctive visual identity.

The surface shows a deep, rich patina, with visible wear, marks and oxidation on the iron, embodying the passage of time and aligning with wabi-sabi aesthetics.
