Antique Japanese storage box with drawers and hinged lid crafted in Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), Japan, early Showa period, circa 1928.
Small storage boxes of this type were commonly used in Japanese homes and workshops during the early twentieth century. Designed to store documents, tools, personal belongings or household items, they combine durability with compact and practical proportions.
The main structure is made of Japanese chestnut, a strong and resilient wood traditionally used in furniture and architecture. The drawers are constructed with Japanese cedar, a lighter wood valued for its stability and smooth sliding properties.
The front features two small upper drawers and a larger lower drawer, framed by decorative brass fittings that reinforce the corners and add visual character. The hinged lid opens to reveal an upper compartment that was originally used for storing larger or frequently used objects.
The surface shows a warm natural patina developed through decades of use. Subtle marks, irregularities and softened edges reflect the piece’s utilitarian history and contribute to its authentic presence.
Today, Japanese boxes of this kind are appreciated as both functional storage pieces and decorative accents. Their compact scale makes them ideal for desks, shelves or side tables, bringing historical texture and traditional Japanese craftsmanship into contemporary interiors.
