Small Japanese ko-dansu cabinet with hinged lid and multiple drawers crafted from paulownia wood (Paulownia spp.), originating from Japan and dating to the late Meiji period and early Taishō period, circa 1868–1926. Compact cabinets of this type were commonly used in Japanese homes and shops for storing documents, seals, money or personal objects.
The structure is reinforced with hand-forged iron fittings and protective corner plates, characteristic of traditional Japanese tansu furniture from the late nineteenth century. The front features three drawers of different sizes, including two smaller upper drawers and a larger bottom drawer for bulkier storage.
The upper section opens through a hinged lid with a carrying handle, revealing a spacious interior compartment designed for documents, textiles or valuables. A distinctive feature of the façade is the circular iron lock plate, a decorative and functional element often seen on Meiji-period furniture.
Paulownia wood was widely used in Japan due to its light weight and natural resistance to humidity and insects. The surface now displays a warm patina developed over time, creating a beautiful contrast between aged wood and dark iron fittings.
Today these small Japanese ko-dansu cabinets are appreciated as storage boxes, desk cabinets or decorative objects, fitting perfectly within interiors inspired by wabi-sabi aesthetics, Japandi interiors or Japanese minimalism.
