Small Japanese ko-dansu cabinet with hinged lid and front drawers made of paulownia wood (Paulownia spp.), originating from Japan and dating from the late Meiji period to the early Taishō period, circa 1868–1926. These compact storage cabinets were part of everyday Japanese interiors and were commonly used to store documents, seals, personal belongings or small work tools.
The piece features a compact and sturdy structure reinforced with hand-forged iron fittings and protective corner plates, characteristic of utilitarian Japanese furniture designed for frequent use. The front includes two drawers fitted with iron handles, while the upper section opens through a hinged lid with a carrying handle, revealing a spacious interior compartment.
Paulownia wood was traditionally preferred for this type of furniture due to its light weight, dimensional stability and resistance to humidity and insects. The surface now shows a deep dark patina developed over time, with areas of wear revealing the natural grain of the wood, creating a striking contrast between aged wood and oxidized iron fittings.
Today these small Japanese ko-dansu cabinets are often used as desk organizers, storage boxes or decorative objects, fitting naturally into interiors inspired by wabi-sabi aesthetics, Japandi interiors or Japanese minimalism.
