Small antique Japanese storage chest with drawers crafted in paulownia and Japanese cedar, dating to the late Meiji period (around 1900). Pieces of this type were traditionally used in Japanese homes to store personal objects, sewing tools or writing implements.
The chest features a compact structure with side drawers, a top tray compartment and a sliding lid protecting the main storage space. Furniture of this scale was commonly used in Japanese interiors where practicality and portability were essential.
The structure is primarily made from paulownia wood (kiri), a material highly valued in Japan for its lightness, dimensional stability and resistance to humidity. The interior incorporates Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), while the handles and fittings are made of iron and copper.
The surface displays a deep natural patina developed through decades of use. Visible wear, tonal variations and marks contribute to the authenticity and historical character of the piece.
