Small antique Japanese chest of drawers crafted in paulownia wood (kiri), dating to the Showa period, circa 1950–1970. Furniture of this type was commonly used in Japanese homes for storing textiles, personal belongings or everyday household items.
The piece features a compact and balanced structure with two upper drawers and two larger lower drawers. Its restrained design reflects the functional simplicity characteristic of early twentieth-century Japanese domestic furniture.
It is made from paulownia wood (Paulownia spp.), known in Japan as kiri, a wood valued for its light weight, dimensional stability and natural resistance to humidity. These qualities made it one of the most widely used materials for traditional household furniture.
The metal drawer handles retain their simple and functional character. The surface displays a soft natural patina developed through years of use, with small marks and tonal variations that contribute to the authenticity of the piece.
Today this chest can easily integrate into contemporary interiors as a small cabinet, storage chest or side piece, bringing a warm and minimalist presence inspired by Japanese design aesthetics.
