Elegant Japanese vertical cabinet with ten drawers made in Japan during the mid Showa period, circa 1950–1979. Furniture of this type was traditionally used to store documents, tools or small materials in workshops, offices and small businesses.
The tall and narrow design allows for numerous storage compartments while maintaining a compact footprint. Each drawer features shell-shaped metal handles, a typical detail found in functional Japanese furniture from the mid-twentieth century.
The cabinet is constructed from a combination of woods commonly used in Japanese utilitarian furniture, including Kalopanax (Kalopanax septemlobus), Shorea, rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica). This mix of species provided durability while keeping the drawers lightweight.
The drawer fronts display a warm wood grain that contrasts beautifully with the dark patina of the metal handles. The surface retains a natural aged patina, with marks of use that reflect its original purpose.
Today, thanks to its vertical proportions and understated design, this cabinet works beautifully as a studio organiser, document cabinet or decorative storage piece in contemporary interiors.
