This antique Chinese painted pine sideboard, with two doors with floral compositions on a cream ground, is a domestic piece from northern China around 1930. Originates from northern China, from the late Qing or early Republican period, where pine was lacquered in light colours and decorated with hand-painted floral motifs.
Painted pine sideboards with floral motifs were common in the northern provinces of China during the transition from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic. The light palette on a cream ground reflected the decorative taste of the modernisation period.
The carcass is of solid pine with mortise-and-tenon joinery. The two doors carry hand-painted floral compositions: branches of white and pink flowers, likely plum and chrysanthemum, on a cream ground. The lower drawers also carry small floral motifs. The hardware is brass.
The floral painting has developed a translucent patina that gives it visual softness. The ground lacquer has lost its sheen evenly. The honesty of the ageing is part of the piece’s appeal.
This sideboard suits japandi, romantic or orientalist eclectic interiors. The painted floral compositions make it especially suitable for bedrooms, living rooms or intimate spaces.
