This set of two antique Japanese boxes in woven bamboo is composed of two storage containers with a fitted lid, broad and rectangular with a low profile. It originates from Japan, from the mid-twentieth century, where bamboo was worked by hand for everyday domestic pieces.

Lidded bamboo boxes kept textiles, documents or household goods in the Japanese home. Their close weave and lightness made for tidy, well-ventilated storage.

Body and lid are hand-woven in fine bamboo fibre, with a continuous pattern across every face. The lid rests on the base steadily and the whole keeps its geometry.

The patina is warm and even, a honey tone softened by use. The surface shows the natural sheen of aged bamboo and small marks that tell its passage.

Its generous surface suits the keeping of blankets, papers or household linen, or service as a decorative box on a low cabinet. It fits wabi-sabi, japandi and contemporary rustic interiors, where it brings natural texture.
