This antique low bench in pine wood is a Chinese bench with a narrow, elongated seat on four legs braced by stretchers, built with mortise-and-tenon joinery. It originates from northern China, from the late Qing dynasty, where solid pine was worked with traditional joints and no metal hardware.
In the Chinese home, long benches served as continuous seating, as a working support or as an auxiliary surface beside the table. Their plain form and seat height answered to a simple furniture meant for daily use in the rural dwelling.
The seat is a solid pine plank, set on straight-section legs joined by low stretchers. The joinery is mortise-and-tenon, fitted by hand, and the wood keeps the marks of the tool. The structure is firm and bears use as seating.
The surface shows a warm, honest patina: the pine surfaces beneath the wear with its grain, its knots and small use marks, in tones from honey to chestnut. The seat, smoothed by contact, carries the wear of a lived-in piece.
Its narrow, elongated form suits use as a seating bench, a bench at the foot of the bed, or a low console and shelf for objects. It fits wabi-sabi, japandi and contemporary rustic interiors, where it brings a plain line and wood with a history.
