This antique Japanese wooden box is a portable storage piece made of solid wood, produced in Japan between the late 19th and early 20th century, during the late Meiji – Taishō period. Its compact form and functional construction reflect traditional utilitarian Japanese furniture designed for everyday use.
This type of storage box was used to store tools, personal items or small domestic objects, with a forged iron top handle allowing easy transport. Its design follows a practical logic, where each element serves a clear purpose within a compact volume.
The construction is simple yet robust, with a closed body, one front drawer and an open compartment. The hand-forged iron hardware and irregular drawer pull indicate a handcrafted or semi-handcrafted production, prior to industrial standardization.
The surface shows a rich deep patina, with natural wear on edges and areas of use. The tonal variations and contrast between interior and exterior enhance its authenticity and its strong connection to wabi-sabi aesthetics.
In contemporary interiors, it works as both a decorative and functional object in minimalist or wabi-sabi settings, bringing texture, history and an intimate scale.
