This antique painted small chest in pine wood features a bluish-green grey painted ground with natural wear and a removable interior tray in bare wood. The top opens on upper hinges with a simple latch. It originates from Poland, from the first half of the twentieth century, where pine was worked using mortise-and-tenon joinery and finished with domestic oil paint.
In rural houses of east-central Europe, small chests like this one served to keep personal items, small tools or documents. Paint applied in thin layers over pine and a compartmented inner tray belong to the peasant domestic register, where the piece served a purely utilitarian function before a decorative one.
The body is built in solid pine. The structure is a closed rectangular volume with a hinged lid, mounted by mortise-and-tenon joinery over an internal frame. Inside, an extractable tray in unpainted pine rests on two horizontal rails. The front hinge and the latch are hand-forged iron.
The bluish-green grey paint shows honest wear: the layer has flaked across wide areas revealing raw pine and older layers of pigment. This layered reading — paint, flaking, wood — is one of the most valued traits in painted rural furniture from central Europe. The hardware presents stable natural oxidation.
With its small size — 55 × 32 × 30 cm — this chest works as an auxiliary table, a decorative storage box, a support over a chest of drawers or a chromatic accent on a shelf. It suits wabi-sabi, European country chic, contemporary rustic and eclectic interiors with rural antique presence.
