Antique Japanese writing desk with drawers crafted from Japanese ash, Japanese horse chestnut and Japanese cedar, dating to the early Showa period (circa 1926–1950). Desks of this type were commonly used in homes, workshops or small offices for writing, accounting and everyday administrative work.
The piece features a practical structure with one wide front drawer and four side drawers, offering multiple storage compartments. Its restrained design reflects the functional approach characteristic of mid-20th century Japanese furniture.
It is constructed using a combination of Japanese ash (Fraxinus mandshurica var. japonica), Japanese horse chestnut (Aesculus turbinata) and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), together with plywood panels used in certain structural elements, typical of furniture produced during the Showa era.
The metal drawer handles retain their simple and utilitarian appearance. The surface displays a warm patina developed over decades of use, with marks and tonal variations that contribute to the authenticity of the piece.
Today this desk can easily serve as a writing desk or compact workspace in contemporary interiors, bringing a natural presence inspired by traditional Japanese furniture design.
