Antique Japanese mizuya-dansu kitchen cabinet made with keyaki burl veneer (Japanese zelkova), dating from the late Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1910–1940.
The mizuya-dansu was traditionally used in Japanese kitchens to store utensils, tableware, dry foods and various household items. Its layout combines closed compartments, shelves and drawers designed to organize everyday objects within a compact piece of furniture.
The front features striking keyaki burl veneer (Zelkova serrata), valued for its dramatic swirling grain patterns that create depth and visual interest. Keyaki wood has long been prized in Japanese furniture making for its durability and distinctive beauty.
The façade combines sliding doors, small cupboards and drawers of different sizes, forming an asymmetrical composition characteristic of early twentieth-century Japanese domestic furniture.
The simple metal handles reflect the utilitarian nature of the cabinet, while the drawer interiors are made from lighter traditional woods used in Japanese carpentry.
The surface retains a natural patina with signs of age and use, developed through decades of everyday life. These marks contribute to the authenticity and character of antique Japanese furniture.
Today this cabinet works well as a storage unit, sideboard or decorative focal piece in contemporary interiors, particularly those inspired by japandi, wabi-sabi or minimalist design.
