Small antique Japanese cabinet with kumiko lattice construction and hinged door, dating from the late Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1910–1940.
This type of Japanese kitchen cabinet was traditionally used to store food, utensils or small containers while keeping them protected and well ventilated. The lattice structure allowed air circulation, helping prevent humidity and keeping stored items fresh.
The sides and door feature delicate kumiko latticework, a traditional Japanese woodworking technique in which thin wooden pieces are precisely assembled into geometric patterns without visible nails.
The interior includes three shelves designed to organize different objects within a compact space. Such cabinets were commonly found in domestic kitchens or small shops where ventilated storage was necessary.
The surface retains a natural patina with signs of age and use, developed over many decades. These marks contribute to the authenticity and character of antique Japanese furniture.
Today this small cabinet can serve as a display case, side cabinet or decorative accent in contemporary interiors, particularly those inspired by japandi, wabi-sabi or minimalist design.
