This large low table in solid fir develops 185 cm of length over a trestle base with a scalloped carved apron and a central pendant. The upper surface, completely honest, shows golden fir in its aged natural patina. China, circa 1920.

Long low tables were used in traditional Chinese homes as altar benches, lateral support of the kang or display surfaces for ritual objects. The limited height responded to the low seated posture characteristic of much of northern Chinese domestic life.

The construction is fully artisanal: top formed by continuous planks with slightly raised edges, trestle base with two profiled supports joined by a low rail, apron with decorative scalloped carving and central pendant as a geometric motif. Traditional mortise and tenon joinery, no nails.

The current patina is notably warm: even golden fir with honest use marks — light traces on the top, soft sheen on the most-handled edges. The surface shows no traces of paint, suggesting either old stripping or an original finish without polychromy. No invasive restorations.

It works as a large coffee table, a display bench under a window or a low console in a wide hallway. Its 52 cm height allows use as a coffee table in front of a long sofa, and the length creates a clean horizontal axis in the space.
