This set of two antique Japanese box in woven bamboo is made of two storage containers with a fitted lid, low and rectangular with a regular weave. It originates from Japan, from the mid-twentieth century, where bamboo was worked by hand for everyday domestic pieces.
Lidded bamboo boxes accompanied Japanese daily life as keepers of textiles, papers or utensils. Their lightness and close weave answered to tidy, well-aired storage.
Body and lid are hand-woven in fine-section bamboo fibre, in a regular pattern that covers every face. The lid sits over the base with a precise clearance, and the structure holds its shape without distortion.
The patina is warm and even, a honey tone softened by use. The fibre shows the sheen of bamboo handled across decades, with small marks that confirm its age.
Its contained format and sober line suit it as a tidy box on a chest, a shelf or a low table. It fits wabi-sabi, japandi and minimalist interiors, where it brings natural warmth and a quiet presence.
