This antique painted trunk in pine wood<\/strong> features a closed rectangular structure with hinged lid<\/em>, hand-forged iron hinges and latch<\/em> and hand-forged iron reinforcements<\/em> on edges and corners with central latch and white Chinese calligraphy painted on the front. It originates from northern China, from the late Qing dynasty, where pine was worked using mortise-and-tenon joinery and finished with polychrome paint over a natural lacquer ground.<\/p>\n

This sturdy Chinese trunk was originally designed for the storage and transportation of goods during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its heavily reinforced wooden construction and iron fittings protected the contents during long journeys by road, river, or rail, while the painted inscriptions identified the owner, trading company, or type of cargo.<\/p>\n

Such chests were commonly used by merchants, warehouses, cooperatives, and administrative organizations to transport textiles, tea, documents, tools, and manufactured goods. Today, these trunks are valued both for their historical significance and decorative appeal, serving as coffee tables, storage chests, or statement pieces in rustic, industrial, and wabi-sabi interiors.<\/p>\n

The body is built in solid pine. The structure is a closed rectangular volume with a hinged lid mounted on hand-forged iron hinges, with a central iron latch. The joinery is mortise-and-tenon over an internal frame and the sides finish in a small lower moulding. The interior keeps the bare pine, while the exterior is fully painted.<\/p>\n

This variant presents a reinforced construction: hand-forged iron bands are applied on edges and corners as structural protection, and a central hand-forged iron escutcheon holds the lock. The surface is painted in heavily worn red with white Chinese calligraphy<\/em> in large characters painted on the front \u2014 probably indications of use, owner or destination, typical of transport and campaign trunks. The patina preserves the worn red, the oxidised reinforcements and the softened white characters.<\/p>\n

With its contained size \u2014 around 85-90 cm in length \u2014 this trunk works as a bedside table, an auxiliary table, a low bench at the foot of a bed or a central decorative piece in an entrance. It suits wabi-sabi, contemporary rustic, japandi and Asian-inspired interiors, where it brings a historical and narrative accent.<\/p>\n
