Ses tiges sont longues, robustes et \u00e9tonnamment flexibles, une combinaison qui en fait depuis des si\u00e8cles un mat\u00e9riau id\u00e9al pour la fabrication de meubles et d’objets robustes. Dans de nombreuses pi\u00e8ces anciennes, le rotin est utilis\u00e9 tel quel, formant la structure principale du meuble, cette partie qui supporte le poids et lui conf\u00e8re sa stabilit\u00e9. <\/p>\n\n

C’est de cette m\u00eame tige de rotin que na\u00eet l’osier. Lorsque l’\u00e9corce ext\u00e9rieure est \u00e9pluch\u00e9e et coup\u00e9e en fines bandes maniables, on obtient le mat\u00e9riau que nous connaissons sous le nom d’osier. L’osier n’est donc pas une plante en soi, mais une fa\u00e7on de travailler le rotin. Ces bandes flexibles sont entrelac\u00e9es \u00e0 la main pour cr\u00e9er des surfaces tress\u00e9es, donnant naissance \u00e0 des paniers, des dossiers, des si\u00e8ges et toutes sortes d’objets o\u00f9 le tressage est le protagoniste. <\/p>\n\n

La diff\u00e9rence entre les deux mat\u00e9riaux appara\u00eet clairement lorsque vous observez une pi\u00e8ce de pr\u00e8s. Le rotin se pr\u00e9sente g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement sous la forme d’\u00e9l\u00e9ments plus \u00e9pais et plus ronds, visibles dans le cadre du meuble ou dans les parties structurelles. L’osier, quant \u00e0 lui, se pr\u00e9sente sous forme de tressage, cr\u00e9ant des motifs d\u00e9licats qui rappellent la vannerie traditionnelle. Comprendre cette distinction permet de porter un regard diff\u00e9rent sur les meubles et objets anciens.
