Il provient du nord de la Chine, de la fin de la dynastie Qing, o\u00f9 le pin \u00e9tait travaill\u00e9 selon un assemblage \u00e0 tenons et mortaises et fini en peinture polychrome sur un fond de laque naturelle.<\/p>\n<p>Dans le mobilier chinois traditionnel, les coffres peints \u00e9taient des pi\u00e8ces de trousseau \u2014 ils faisaient partie de la dot nuptiale \u2014 et contenaient \u00e0 l&#8217;int\u00e9rieur textiles, v\u00eatements de f\u00eate, documents et objets personnels. Le d\u00e9cor peint sur la fa\u00e7ade, les flancs et le couvercle \u00e9tait une d\u00e9claration de prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9 domestique et un v\u00e9hicule de symbolique auspicieuse familiale.<\/p>\n<p>Le corps est construit en pin massif. La structure est un volume rectangulaire ferm\u00e9 \u00e0 couvercle abattant mont\u00e9 sur charni\u00e8res en fer forg\u00e9, avec fermeture centrale \u00e9galement en fer. L&#8217;assemblage est \u00e0 tenons et mortaises sur cadre interne et les flancs se terminent par une petite moulure inf\u00e9rieure. L&#8217;int\u00e9rieur conserve le pin brut, tandis que l&#8217;ext\u00e9rieur est enti\u00e8rement peint.<\/p>\n<p>Le panneau frontal accueille une composition pictoriale \u00e0 <em>figure humaine<\/em> \u2014 lettr\u00e9 ou courtisan \u2014 parmi v\u00e9g\u00e9tation peinte, v\u00eatu d&#8217;un costume traditionnel et repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 en sc\u00e8ne de jardin. Au-dessus du panneau court une frise \u00e0 <em>chrysanth\u00e8mes (ju \u83ca)<\/em> oranges et verts. Les compositions \u00e0 figures solitaires en jardin appartiennent au registre lettr\u00e9 du r\u00e9pertoire iconographique chinois et \u00e9voquent retraite contemplative et harmonie avec la nature. La palette m\u00eale ocre, vert, rouge et trac\u00e9s noirs sur fond sombre.<\/p>\n<p>Par sa taille contenue \u2014 environ 85-90 cm de longueur \u2014 ce coffre fonctionne comme table de chevet, table d&#8217;appoint, banc bas au pied du lit ou pi\u00e8ce d\u00e9corative centrale dans une entr\u00e9e.
