This set of two antique painted tin milk cans features two cylindrical containers with a narrowed upper neck, side handles and original cream paint with warm wear. It originates from Poland, from the mid-twentieth century, when tinplate painted in oil was used in rural dairies and small agricultural operations.
Tin milk cans were a standard piece in the European rural landscape of the twentieth century. They served to transport fresh milk from the farm to the local market or central dairy, carried by the side handles or loaded on carts and bicycles. The cream or white paint applied over the tin had a hygienic function in addition to aesthetic. The two pieces of the set come from the same series, with a small difference in height.
Each can is built in rolled tinplate with welded seams. The body is cylindrical with a narrower neck at the top finishing in an open mouth, originally closed by a lid now absent. The handles are hand-forged iron fixed with rivets. The cream paint was applied in thin oil layers and has aged keeping the base.
Both pieces measure 34 × 30 cm in plan. Piece #1 has a height of 59 cm; piece #2, 62 cm. The difference is common in milk cans produced in series, where height varied slightly per batch. The cream paint shows soft chipping revealing the dark tin of the body and, occasionally, traces of earlier blue paint in very faded tones.
With its clear cylindrical form and warm patina, this set works as a decorative pair in entrances, rural dining rooms, terraces and European country chic projects. They also serve as large candle holders, umbrella stands or decorative vases. They suit contemporary rustic, wabi-sabi, French brocante and eclectic interiors.
